Well this year’s swim is over and the dust is settling. What am amazing day. We are grateful to our corporate sponsors who have made this years swim possible.
It started as we all congregated by the Waterside Pool and the final briefing was attended by all the kayakers and swimmers. An impressive site with well over fifty people in MND Blue sat in wonderful sunshine. Ian Pratt addressed everyone which was both emotional and inspirational.
We set off from Ryde sands at 12.30, 22 swimmers, 30 kayakers with 7 safety boats stationed offshore to help guide us all across.
The swim itself was pretty tough as the currents were strong and a west north westerly wind, which gusted from time to time, created a chop on the sea. All the swimmers wore special wrist bands in honour of MND Angels and Warriors and several used them as inspiration to keep going in some very challenging conditions.
Southsea seafront was awash with MND T shirts as over 200 people waited for the swimmers to arrive, which we all duly did. The reception was just brilliant and coming ashore to that welcome is something that will stay with us for the rest of our lives.
The whole day was topped off with and awards evening at Yelfs Hotel in Ryde where music was provide by All Washed Up. There was a real team feeling and a great sense of achievement throughout the room.
The day itself was full of emotion, determination, endeavour, support, great friendship, camaraderie and most of all unification for the cause of raising funds and awareness for MND. Thank you to everyone who took part, swimmers, kayakers, safety boats and all the other helps and supporters.
The swim took place on 21 July, leaving Ryde Sands around noon, with the last swimmers arriving at Southsea beach at approximately 3:30pm.
